How I evaluate others' teaching

The first thing that I will consider when I evaluate others’ simulated teaching is the type of set induction that they used. I will see whether the set induction that they used is related to what they are going to teach or not. Besides, I am also quite care whether the set induction is interesting or not; as set induction is very important to get the students’ attention. I had an experience where the set induction is really boring as the teacher does not know what type of background knowledge that the students have. The teacher just shows a confusing picture and asked the students what the picture about. This type of set induction is really bad as it would lose the attention of the students.

Second, I will consider about the task that the teacher chose for students to attempt. In this case, I will first relate the task with the proficiency of the students, whether they are advanced, intermediate or beginner. If the target students are beginner, then the task that given to them should have guidance. Teacher also has to guide the students when they are attempting the task. If the students are advanced, the task that is given should be more difficult and more to high level of thinking skills. For example, exercise that involves analysis is suitable for them. Ask the students to analyze the use of language in the abstract is one of the suitable activities for advanced students.

Third, is the way that the teacher teaches. The voice that the teacher used should be appropriate. Be sure that students can listen what the teacher is teaching. Slow voice is definitely not suitable; as the students could not hear what the teacher is teaching and they will feel boring in the class. They will start to do other things and lose attention to what the teacher is teaching. Besides voice, the activities that the teacher used must be interesting. Make the students to move around the class by doing some role play activities. Then the students will feel excited and like to attend to the class.

I agree with Eunice that the first thing I will consider when I evaluate others’ simulated teaching is the type of set induction. If someone started her lesson by just writing a few letter on the board and ask us what we can think from the word, I will lost my interest on her lesson. For example, some of our course mates writing the word “fate” on the board, and then ask us to think about the word. Well…it is one of the strategies that we learn to use in set induction, but I consider it as a bored strategies. However, there are also many strategies that used by our course mate is very attractive. Giving the student some games and video playing is quiet interesting, let them to involve by walking around is making the set induction more attractive to the students. Furthermore, I think it is also fulfill the requirement of a set induction to open the correct schemata and get their interest on the lesson.

Eunice’s blog on her style in evaluating other’s teaching is come what similar to how I evaluate my peers too. She believes that it is essential for the set induction to be interesting so as to grab the attention of the students. I believe this is very true. If the teacher comes into the class early in the morning and starts babbling on the topic without any “attention grabber”, do you expect the students to pay any attention to you? Besides that, Eunice also believes that the worksheets have to be suitable with her students’ level of proficiency. We have learnt in EDU3205 The Teaching of Aural Oral Skills that we as teachers will have to adjust the worksheets or task so as to suit the students’ ability. I mean what’s the point of designing an activity that the students cannot understand, let alone attempt it? It will be a waste of time and energy for both the parents and the students. Eunice is also a believer in the importance of the teacher’s voice projections. Teacher’s voice should be loud and clear so that all the students in the class will be able to listen clearly. Another thing about voice projection is that if the teacher’s voice is soft and unclear, students will eventually lose interest in the lesson. So no matter how good the teacher designs the tasks, once the students choose to shut down and ignore the teacher, everything will go back to ground zero.

I agree with Eunice Ong on the topic what I will consider when I evaluate others'. It's true that the first thing to consider is the set induction. Set induction is essential in opening the correct schemata of the students and also it is important to initiate students interest on the topic that the teacher will be teaching. Next, teacher should consider the students proficiency. There are many level of students proficiency and teacher should know how to adjust their activity with the students competency.
Again, Miss Eunice make a good comment on the voice projection of the teacher. Good voice projection portrays teacher credibility in class. If teacher speaks too slow she will loose control in her class. Students will starts talking to each other and the learning process will no able being conduct. In conclusion, I totally agree with what Eunice said about the important things that teacher should consider in their teaching activity.

Eunice, I agree with you that the aspects you put into consideration are set induction, the task and the way a teacher teaches in the class. Without these qualities, how are students get excited and pay attention to the class? When we are going to teach, we really have to consider our students’ level of proficiency. If the task is inappropriate, students will find it difficult and tend to loose attention or shut off their minds.
Besides that, the set induction must be interesting and it is very important because it leads to the next activity ahead. If the set induction is not creative and does not attract students’ attention, teaching will not be effective.
Lastly, the way the teacher teaches is important. A teacher has to be loud in his or her voice in order to show confidence so that students will put their trust and confidence to the teacher. This can show that the teacher is reliable and is all ready to help or facilitate students.
